Ålesund has a long history, although the city first became a city in 1848. In 1904 a great fire destroyed the entire city, and the reconstruction
took place in the Art Nouveau architecture, with tower, spire and imaginative ornamentation on houses. The city's distinctive architecture has
given it a unique place in Norwegian architectural history, and Ålesund is a member of a European network of Art Nouveau. Ålesund is now a modern
commercial and industrial center, and this seaside city in Møre og Romsdal is one of the largest export ports for cod.
